Docteur Ampie VILJOEN

Tweerivier General and Orthopaedic Wildlife Services

Qualified as a veterinarian in 1994 out of Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

I love the endless variation that my job offers and have therefor always been involved in mixed animal practice. Currently owning and running a solo practice mainly focused on wildlife management,  medicine and orthopaedics.

As a highlight of my career, I pioneered the use of circular external fixation as an alternative in the treatment of simple and complicated fractures in wildlife. To date more than 300 individuals have been treated this way over the years.

During the last 3 years I focused on comparisons of the different techniques of horn trimming in Rhinos. This procedure is done to disincentivise poaching of this iconic African species but no standard protocol exists for it.

It is my pleasure and privilege to be involved with Cresam as we share a love for the African Fauna and Flora and for the art of Veterinary science.
